Créé en 2000 par des musiciens passionnés, ce festival offre une programmation qui allie qualité musicale, créativité et expression libre. Caractérisé par ses projets originaux et des collaborations inattendues, L’OFF JAZZ met à l’honneur des artistes chevronnés et de jeunes créateurs de la scène jazz d’ici et concrétise des rencontres avec des invités nationaux et internationaux.
Cet événement unique est essentiel afin de stimuler la vitalité des musiciens, des compositeurs et des amateurs de jazz. Créer de la musique jazz en 2013 est une entreprise amoureuse, dans un contexte souvent contraignant. C’est donc avec passion que L’OFF JAZZ vous invite à venir écouter les musiciens jouer avec leur cœur, leur âme et leurs tripes!
UNE OUVERTURE SAVAMMENT ORCHESTRÉE
Lion d’Or
Lors de la soirée d’ouverture du festival, le jeudi 3 octobre, un véritable déploiement s’opérera sur la majestueuse scène du Lion d’Or, avec Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra. Accompagnée de 18 musiciens, la saxophoniste et compositrice Christine Jensen présentera le nouvel album de son ensemble, Habitat, lancé pour l’occasion. Tout à fait inscrite dans la démarche de rassemblement et la notion de communauté véhiculées par L’OFF JAZZ, la soirée d’ouverture du festival promet un concert grandiose et magique!

LES 5 À 7 DE LA DÉCOUVERTE
Résonance Café
Un nouveau lieu pour les 5 à 7 de L’OFF JAZZ cette année : le Résonance Café, créé par deux jeunes musiciens de la scène locale, Martin Heslop et Colin Power. Le festival souhaite encourager la belle initiative de ce nouveau lieu de diffusion du jazz à Montréal.
Les jeunes créateurs de la scène jazz d’ici et les artistes plus établis sont invités à exprimer leur talent et leur créativité dans cette série conviviale et propice à la découverte, grâce notamment à son principe de contribution volontaire. Des concerts de grande qualité, avec au programme : Alec Walkington’s Contraband, Cédric Dind-Lavoie Quartet, Janis Steprans Quartet, Benjamin Deschamps Quartet, Lisanne Tremblay 4tet et Marcin Garbulinski Quintet. Sans oublier Renée Yoxon & Mark Ferguson, venus d’Ottawa pour clôturer la série des 5 à 7, le samedi 12 octobre.

LES CONCERTS DE SOIRÉE : INVITÉS INTERNATIONAUX ET LANCEMENTS D’ALBUMS
Lion d’Or, Sala Rossa et Upstairs
Pour les concerts de 20 h et 21 h 30, L’OFF JAZZ investit plusieurs quartiers montréalais en se promenant du mythique Lion d’Or à la Sala Rossa, en passant par le Upstairs.
Le festival tient à favoriser les collaborations entre artistes d’ici et d’ailleurs en organisant des rencontres musicales avec des invités internationaux de renom. Tout d’abord le concert Marianne Trudel + William Parker + Hamid Drake présenté au Lion d’Or le 4 octobre, pour une collaboration de haut vol entre Montréal, Chicago et New York. En première partie de soirée, la pianiste Marianne Trudel se produira également en trio, mais accompagnée cette fois de ses complices montréalais Morgan Moore et Philippe Melanson. Puis le samedi 5 octobre sur la scène du Upstairs, le talentueux saxophoniste Chet Doxas s’unira à de brillants musiciens newyorkais, Matt Stevens, Eric Doob et Zack Lober, pour nous livrer ses compositions bien ficelées, tirées de son nouvel album Dive.
Le dimanche 6 octobre, le point de rendez-vous est à nouveau le Upstairs pour deux concerts du pianiste d’origine terre-neuvienne devenu ontarien Jeff Johnston, en formule trio. Swing et interaction en perspective!
En plus des deux albums lancés lors des soirées d’ouverture et de clôture, deux autres albums très attendus seront lancés dans le cadre du festival cette année.
Tout d’abord, le 9 octobre à la Sala Rossa, L’Ensemble Rémi-Jean LeBlanc, septuor mené par le jeune bassiste émérite, lancera un premier album intitulé Neuf histoires plus ou moins courtes pour sept musiciens. Le concert sera précédé d’un spectacle co-présenté avec Twigg Musique pour le lancement des saxophones de marque Expression signés par trois illustres saxophonistes de la scène montréalaise, Jean-Pierre Zanella, Rémi Bolduc et Alexandre Côté.
Le lendemain, ce sera le tour de l’album Quartetski does Stravinsky – Le sacre du Printemps d’être officiellement lancé dans le cadre du festival, avec une relecture inusitée et surprenante de cette œuvre majeure, sous la direction du gambiste Pierre-Yves Martel. À découvrir, ou plutôt redécouvrir absolument! Le concert sera suivi de The Youjsh, groupe à l’énergie festive communicative. La soirée se déroulera à la Sala Rossa et sera co-présentée par Suoni per il Popolo.
Le 11 octobre, la Sala Rossa recevra Nordest trio en première partie de soirée. Le contrebassiste Christophe Papadimitriou présentera pour la première fois à L’OFF JAZZ ses compositions aux lignes mélodieuses. La soirée se poursuivra avec Litania Projekt, pour une alliance entre musique néoclassique et jazz nord-européen, puisant également dans les origines slaves de son auteur, Jacques Kuba Séguin (révélation Jazz Radio-Canada 2012-2013). À noter, la présence du violoniste polonais Adam Baldych. En collaboration avec le Consulat général de la République de Pologne. Une soirée sous le signe de la délicatesse et de l’émotion.

DES FINS DE SOIRÉE INTIMISTES ET INSPIRÉES
Casa del Popolo
Les concerts de 22 h 30 proposent une série plus audacieuse avec une variété de projets hauts-en-couleur, dont le point commun est une approche singulière dans la création. La Casa del Popolo est propice à une écoute attentive et favorise la mise en valeur des subtilités et des textures. Le Trio Derome Guilbeault Tanguay ouvrira le bal le vendredi 4 octobre, avec le lancement de son nouvel album WOW!. Se succèderont ensuite tout au long du festival : Tilting, Mend Ham, Isis Giraldo Poetry Project, Craig Pedersen Quartet et enfin Joel Kerr Quartet.

Pour sa soirée de clôture le samedi 12 octobre, L’OFF JAZZ, en co-production avec Effendi Records, a souhaité s’ouvrir sur le monde en proposant un vrai périple aux festivaliers : World Colors – John Roney & JazzLab Orchestra + invité Mark Feldman. Célébrant dix ans de création et d’innovation, l’orchestre JazzLab a demandé au pianiste John Roney de composer une suite de neuf œuvres interprétées par plusieurs des meilleurs artistes de jazz de Montréal. L’album World Colors sera lancé à cette occasion. Invité par L’OFF JAZZ, l’excellent violoniste américain Mark Feldman se joindra aux musiciens pour une soirée exceptionnelle et rassembleuse qui viendra clôturer avec éclat le festival!
En début de soirée, le prix François-Marcaurelle / Guilde des musiciens et musiciennes du Québec sera décerné à un musicien ou musicienne ou à un groupe s’étant particulièrement distingué lors de la 14e édition.

EN MARGE DU FESTIVAL : UNE RENCONTRE PROFESSIONNELLE ET D’AUTRES LANCEMENTS
Les lundi 7 et mardi 8 octobre, L’OFF JAZZ reprendra son souffle avant de passer à son excitante deuxième partie. Mais le jazz continue! Le festival recommande notamment deux lancements : celui de la compilation du label montréalais ODD SOUND Records, le lundi 7 octobre, au Résonance Café, puis le spectacle-lancement du nouvel album de MIRIODOR, Cobra Fakir, le mardi 8, au Belmont.
À noter également le mardi 8 octobre, un événement important qui se déroulera à la Casa del Popolo : l’assemblée de fondation du Regroupement Jazz Québec. Le milieu se structure! Tous les intervenants en jazz (musiciens, diffuseurs, événements, enseignants, label…) intéressés à y participer sont invités à communiquer avec les organisateurs, à lofffestivaldejazz@gmail.com, avant le 1er octobre 2013.
CAMPAGNE DE FINANCEMENT POUR SOUTENIR L’OFF JAZZ
Après plus de 13 ans d’existence, L’OFF JAZZ a plus que jamais sa place à Montréal : celle d’un événement rassembleur servant de tribune et de plateforme pour la mise en lumière de la scène jazz québécoise. Aujourd’hui, l’équilibre financier du festival est fragile. Une grande campagne de financement a été lancée afin de réunir des fonds visant à assurer sa pérennité. La bonne nouvelle est que le festival bénéficie du programme Mécénat Placement Culture (du Conseil des Arts et des lettres du Québec) qui permettra la multiplication des dons reçus.

Published onSeptember 11th 2013 – A jazz celebration is taking place in the middle of Montreal’s autumn season. The OFF JAZZ festival will present its 14th edition, from October 3rd through October 12th 2013. Created in 2000 by passionate Montreal musicians, this festival offers a program that blends musical quality, creativity and free expression. Renowned for its original projects and its unexpected collaborations, the OFF JAZZ festival shines the spotlight on seasoned, as well as up-and-coming local jazz creators, while facilitating collaborations between local jazz creators and guest musicians from across Canada and from around the world.
This unique event is essential in stimulating the vitality of Montreal musicians, composers and jazz fans alike. Creating jazz music in 2013 is indeed a labour of love, which takes place in an often-challenging context. Therefore, it is with much enthusiasm that the OFF JAZZ festival invites you to come listen to these musicians play with their hearts, bodies and souls!
A WELL-ORCHESTRATED OPENING NIGHT
Lion d’Or
On Thursday October 3rd, an impressive call-to-arms will take place for the opening night of the festival on the majestic Lion d’Or stage, courtesy of the Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra. Accompanied by 18 musicians, the saxophonist and composer Christine Jensen will perform her new album, Habitat, in its entirety, availing her of this opportunity to launch her new album. In keeping with the up-with-people community approach of the OFF JAZZ festival, the opening night promises to be a magical evening on a grand scale.

DISCOVERY 5 À 7s
Résonance Café
Presenting the new venue for the OFF JAZZ 5 à 7s (5:00PM to 7:00PM happy hours): the Résonance Café, founded by two young musicians from the local jazz scene, Martin Heslop and Colin Power. The festival wishes to encourage this wonderful initiative of providing Montreal with a new jazz venue.
Up-and-coming creators of the local jazz scene, as well as more established artists are invited to share their talent and creativity in this laid-back series, which lends itself to new discoveries while featuring a pay-what-you-can policy. Concerts of outstanding quality are on the program such as: Alec Walkington’s Contraband, The Cédric Dind-Lavoie Quartet, The Janis Steprans Quartet, The Benjamin Deschamps Quartet, The Lisanne Tremblay 4tet and The Marcin Garbulinski Quintet, as well as Renée Yoxon & Mark Ferguson, who will be coming in from Ottawa to close the 5 à 7 series on Saturday October 12th.

EVENING CONCERTS: SPECIAL GUESTS FROM AROUND THE WORD AND RECORD LAUNCHES
Lion d’Or, Sala Rossa and Upstairs
For the 8:00PM and 9:30PM concerts, the OFF JAZZ festival will be traipsing through several Montreal neighbourhoods, travelling from the mythical Lion d’Or to the Sala Rossa with a stopover at the Upstairs. The festival seeks to encourage collaborations between local artists from here and abroad by organizing musical meetings with renowned international guests. Firstly, the Marianne Trudel + William Parker + Hamid Drake show, which takes place at the Lion d’Or on October 4th, will be a high-flying collaboration between heavy hitters from Montreal, Chicago and New York. As an opening act, Mariannne Trudel will be performing with her trio, accompanied this time by her Montreal partners-in-crime, Morgan Moore and Philippe Melanson. As well, on Saturday October 5th at Upstairs, the talented saxophonist Chet Doxas will take the stage, shouldered by his brilliant New York musicians: Matt Stevens, Eric Doob and Zack Lober, delivering his well-crafted compositions featured on his new album Dive.
On Sunday October 6th, all roads meet once again at Upstairs for two concerts featuring the Newfoundland pianist who now calls Ontario home, Jeff Johnston, who will be performing along with his trio. Swing and interaction guaranteed!
Besides the two albums launched during the opening and closing nights of the festival, two other eagerly anticipated albums will be launched during the festival. Firstly, on October 9th at the Sala Rossa, the Ensemble Rémi-Jean LeBlanc, a septet led by the talented young bassist will launch their first album called Neuf histoires plus ou moins courtes pour sept musiciens. The concert will be preceded by a show co-presented by Twigg Musique, which will be launching a new series of Expression saxophones. These instruments will bear signatures from three legendary saxophonists from the Montreal jazz scene: Jean-Pierre Zanella, Rémi Bolduc and Alexandre Côté.
The following day, the spotlight will shine on Quartetski does Stravinsky – The Rites Of Spring, a unique and surprising take on this major work, under the direction of the viola player Pierre-Yves Martel. They will also take advantage of this opportunity to launch their new album. An absolute-must discovery, or rather re-discovery! Immediately afterwards, The Youjsh will fill the venue with their contagious cutting-loose spirit. The evening will be held at the Sala Rossa and will be co-presented by Suoni per il Popolo.
On October 11th, warming up the crowd at the Sala Rossa will be the Nordest trio. Then, the upright bass player Christophe Papadimitriou will present, for the first time at the OFF JAZZ festival, his supremely melodic compositions. The evening will continue with the Litania Projekt, for a cross-pollination between neoclassical and North-European jazz, drawing as well upon the Slavic origins of its leader, Jacques Kuba Séguin (who was awarded the Révélation Jazz Radio-Canada award for 2012-2013). Also noteworthy is the presence of the Polish violinist Adam Baldych, courtesy of the General consulate of the Republic of Poland. An evening brimming with subtlety and emotion!

The 10:30PM concerts offer programming that features a wide variety of highly colourful projects, whose common ground is their unique approach to creation. The Casa Del Popolo fosters an attentive listening experience that encourages the emergence of subtleties and textures in musical performances. FINISHING OFF WITH A BANG, THE OFF FESTIVAL GOES GLOBAL

For its closing night on Saturday October 12th, the OFF JAZZ festival, with co-production assistance from Effendi Records, goes global by offering a far-reaching journey to festival-goers: World Colors – John Roney & JazzLab Orchestra + special guest Mark Feldman. Celebrating ten years of creation and innovation, the JazzLab Orchestra gave the pianist John Roney the mission of composing a suite of nine pieces, to be performed by several of the best jazz artists in Montreal. As well, the album World Colors will be launched that evening. Invited by the OFF JAZZ festival, the excellent American violinist Mark Feldman will join forces with Montreal musicians for an exceptional evening that will wrap up the festival in style!
To start off the evening, the François-Marcaurelle / Guilde des musiciens et musiciennes du Québec award will be conferred to a musician who has set himself/herself apart during the 14th edition of the festival.

ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE FESTIVAL: A GENERAL MEETING AND OTHER LAUNCHES
On Monday October 7th and on Tuesday October 8th, the OFF JAZZ takes a deep breath before diving into its exciting second phase. The beat goes on! The festival recommends two launches in particular: that of a compilation album put out by the Montreal label, ODD SOUND Records, taking place on Monday October 7th at the Résonance Café, as well as the record launch / show for MIRIODOR’s new album, Cobra Fakir on Tuesday October 8th at the Belmont. Another noteworthy event taking place on Tuesday October 8th is the general meeting of the Regroupement Jazz Québec, which is being held at the Casa Del Popolo. The community is getting organized! A FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN FOR THE OFF JAZZ FESTIVAL
After more than 13 years of operation, the OFF JAZZ has now, more than ever, carved out a place for itself in Montreal as a rallying point that shines the spotlight on the Quebec Jazz scene. Today, the financial health of the festival is in a precarious state. A large-scale fundraising drive has been launched in order to secure the funds that will allow for its continued operation. The good news is that the festival benefits from the Mécénat Placement Culture program (from the Conseil des Arts et des lettres du Québec), which will allow for the multiplication for every donation received.
